Electric Charges and Fields

Class 12 Physics Chapter 1

{as per NCERT book}

1.1 Introduction

Electrostatics deals with the study of forces, fields and potentials arising from static charges.

The word 'Electrostatics' is made up from two words - 'Electric' and 'Statics'. So, 'electrostatics' stands for static (i.e. stationary) charges and their effects.

1.2 Electric Charge

  • There are some pair of materials which when rubbed together, produces static electricity. e.g. glass rod & silk cloth.
  • There are two types of charges - positive & negative.
  • Like charges repel, opposite charges attract.
  • A simple apparatus to detect charge on a body is the Gold-leaf Electroscope.
  • A negatively charged body has an excess of electrons, whereas, a positively charged body has a shortage of electrons.

 1.3 Conductors and Insulators

 1.4 Charging by Induction

1.5 Basic Properties of Electric Charge

  1. Additivity of charges
  2. Charge is conserved
  3. Quantisation of charge
